It is illegal to inflict harm upon or attempt to inflict violent harm upon another person.
If a person is convicted of assault, they may face up to a $1,000 fine, six months in jail or both for the crime. This sentence may vary however, if one of many special circumstances are present.

A defendant could face the same punishment if an assault occurs on school or park property. If the defendant is convicted and is a minor, they may also be ordered to attend counseling.
